Our doctors

Dr Wendy Bernet (MBBS, FRACGP, DipRACOG)

I have spent 26 of my 28 years as a GP in practice at the Andrew Place Clinic and enjoy working with a great team of doctors, nurses and admin staff who are all committed to providing the best possible care to our patients.

I enjoy all aspects of general practice but have a special interest in women’s health, family planning and shared antenatal care.

I am also committed to the teaching and training of our future GPs. The Registrar program at Andrew Place Clinic has seen some 70 young doctors gain insight and experience through the General Practice Education and Training Program that APC have supported for more than 20 years.

I am married with two adult children and enjoy spending my down time bushwalking, reading and travelling.

Dr Eric Tay (MBBS, FRACGP)

I graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1993 with honours in Medicine and Surgery and have been a fellow of The Royal College of General Practitioners since 2000.

My areas of expertise include care of the aged, diabetes and the removal of abnormal skin lesions. I also have substantial experience in developmental paediatrics and asthma management.

I have 2 primary school aged children who make me drive them to numerous social and sporting engagements.

You will find me working 5 days a week and doing home and nursing home visits, just like the traditional family doctor has always done!

Dr Christina Illing (MBBS, FRACGP)

I returned to Andrew Place Clinic in 2014, having previously been here as a registrar in 2012. It is a fantastic place to work, with a very supportive team of doctors, nurses and administrative staff, and diverse, interesting and friendly patients.

My areas of interest include womens health, shared-care, preventative health and removal of skin lesions. I also enjoy the privilege of looking after multiple generations of a family across their life journey.

When I am not in the office, I can be found playing with my two dogs, baking and catching up with friends and family.

Dr. Lisa Mifsud (MBBS (Hons), BMedSci, DRANZCOG, DCH, FRACGP)

I returned to Andrew Place in 2015 after completing my registrar training here in 2013.

I have a particular interest in women's health and sexual health - having worked at the Royal Women's Hospital and the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre - and I am currently registered for shared care with the local hospitals. Despite this interest I do enjoy all aspect of general practice and am happy to see anyone in need.

Outside of work you will find me exercising, travelling and enjoying musicals.

Dr Melanie Hemsley (MBBS (Hons), BA BSc, DRANZCOG, FRACGP)

I have been a member of the Andrew Place team since 2012 and became a fellow of the college of General Practitioners in early 2014.

I am particularly interested in women's health and hold a diploma of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. I am also registered as a shared care provider for maternity patients at the Mercy and Nothern hospitals.

A particular delight during my working day is also seeing and treating the little ones that make up the Andrew Place's paediatric population.

Outside of work I am most often found running after my 2 adorable children. Other loves - (in no particular order) - include coffee, pilates, travel, reading and good-food.

Dr. Melissa Cairns (MBBS, BSc (Hons), FRACGP, DRANZCOG)

I first joined Andrew Place Clinic as a General Practice Registrar in 2012 and just had to come back – it’s such a great clinic!

I am a bit of an all-rounder which is why I love being a GP – I like to look after everyone from babies and kids through to the elderly in our local nursing home. I like to ensure you are staying as healthy as possible by looking at your preventative health care.

I enjoy women’s health and hold a diploma of obstetrics and am registered for shared maternity care.  I also like to do minor surgical procedures such as implanon insertions and removal of skin lesions.

When I am not at work I will be tending to my large veggie patch, running after my toddler or our dog, or camping in the bush with my family.

Dr Giuseppe (Joe) Giarrusso (MBBS)

I joined Andrew Place Clinic as a GP in the early years and have been caring for patients in the local community for more than 35 years. I have seen four generations of some families and enjoy working and living in Bundoora.

My special medical interests are in allergies, asthma and hypertension, but I am just as happy helping patients of all ages overcome and manage their health issues.

My colleagues and patients make this clinic an enjoyable and rewarding place to work.

I have an Italian background and can speak fluent Italian, although I am currently trying to also learn some of the finer points of the French language. Outside of work I also like to head to the golf course when I can and enjoy watching and supporting other sports.

Dr Roslyn Rayner (MBBS, Grad Dip Applied Science – Integrative Medicine)

I have worked as a GP at Andrew Place Clinic since 1993. Although I enjoy all aspects of General Practice, I have a particular interest in women's & children's health, shared antenatal care, sports medicine and removal of small skin lesions.

I choose to work at Andrew Place Clinic because it is a caring and compassionate workplace. We all strive towards professional excellence and feel strongly about our local community and patients.

My interests outside work include yoga, skiing (both downhill and cross country) and reading, but nothing beats time with family and friends.

Dr Phil Smith (MBBS, FRACGP)

I have been working part-time at Andrew Place Clinic since 1998. I am happy to see a wide range of problems and ages, though as a father of 2 young children I obviously have empathy and experience with childhood illnesses!
I work Wednesday mornings, all day Thursdays and Fridays, as well as 1 in 4 Saturday mornings. You'll probably find me in a different consulting room depending on which day of the week it is!
Occasionally my non-medical interests take me away for a conference or travel, but you can normally book an appointment with me at fairly short notice.

Dr Genevieve Shing (MBBS)

I happily returned to Andrew Place Clinic after my time here as a Registrar in 2010, and continue to thoroughly enjoy a really satisfying career here.  There is a wonderful range of patients and a fantastic, professional and supportive work environment.

I currently work Monday to Thursday, and one in four Saturdays.  Whilst I enjoy the absolute variety each and every day brings, my interests include women’s and children’s health, and preventative care.

Beyond this, I love anything and everything to do with dogs, running and challenging myself in the kitchen!

Dr. Kate Ludescher (MBBS)

I first worked at Andrew Place Clinic as a registrar in 2006 and enjoyed it so much that I returned in 2008 and have been here ever since!

I enjoy looking after our patient population and the variety of presentations we see, but have a particular interest in Women's Health (including Shared Maternity Care for our pregnant women) and Children's Health.

I work part-time (Monday and Thursday mornings and some Saturdays). The rest of my time is spent looking after my 3 young children and enjoying a range of activities with them and my husband. I love cooking and eating good food, travelling and almost anything that allows me to be outside in the fresh air.

Dr. Susanne Oldmeadow (MBBS)

I joined Andrew Place Clinic in 2008, after spending 5 years working in beautiful rural South Gippsland.

My particular interests are paediatrics, shared-care and minor procedures.

I work part-time and also do some work at the after-hours clinic at Austin Hospital, which gives me a nice sense of continuity of community care.

In 2013, I began part-time study towards a Masters of Bioethics.

I enjoy the practice and when we're not run off our feet (which is most of the time!) there's always room for a laugh with staff.
